Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar gets £300,000 revamp

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:23, Tuesday August 9th, 2011.

The current Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar is being replaced with a new £300,000 building

Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar is to relaunch itself later next month after a £300,000 development.

Currently a wooden hut, the snack bar business will move into new purpose-built premises currently being constructed nearby.

The £300,000 building is seven times the size of the current snack bar and is being built to be as eco-friendly as it can.

Solar panels will feed into the under floor heating and hot water systems while rainwater will be collected and stored in a 6,000 gallon container to flush the toilets with.

Established in 1957, the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar is famous to all who make the trip over the mountain to Cardiff. It is also a firm favourite with walkers and ramblers.

Snack bar owner Gavin Jones, who bought the business aged 21 in 1992, said: “The relaunch is a celebration and a way of giving back and saying a big thank you to everyone for all their support over the last 54 years.”

Despite its flash new environmentally-friendly building, there is one item that will not be changing – the Mountain Monster Burger. The renowned hangover cure, according to local visitors, will still be three burgers, bacon, mushrooms, onions and cheese in a bap.

Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar will have its grand relaunch event on Saturday September 17 between 10am and 4pm.
