Caerphilly MP Wayne David calls on UK Government to reverse police cuts in wake of riots

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:12, Wednesday August 10th, 2011.

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has called for cuts to the police budget to be scrapped in light of the recent rioting in English cities.

Welsh police authorities are currently giving support to the Metropolitan Police to help ensure that there are sufficient policing levels in London.

Mr David, who was responsible for liaising with the Home Office when he was Wales Office Minister in the last Government, said it was essential that no part of the country, including Wales, sees its policing levels reduced.

He said: “It is clear that the cuts which have been announced and are ‘in the pipe line’ will have a serious impact on front-line policing. I strongly urge the Government to do what everyone surely expects and reverse these cuts.

“The safety of individuals, communities and property must be our primary consideration whether it is London, other English cities, or Wales.”

The UK Government, which has responsibility for policing in Wales, is planning budget cuts of up to 20%.
