Talented young musicians will be blowing their own trumpets in a bid to clinch the coveted Caerphilly County Borough Schools’ Young Musician of the Year title.

Hopefuls will be eager to impress the judges at Blackwood Miners’ Institute on Saturday March 5, in the annual competition organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Adjudicators will assess the youngsters’ talent during the day’s preliminary classes and the winners in each of the six classes – Piano, Singing, Strings, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion – will then fight it out for the hotly contested overall Young Musician of the Year 2011 title during the evening’s Grand Final starting at 7.30pm.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning said: “The Young Musician of the Year competition enables local youngsters to showcase their talents, and every year so far has unearthed some real gems of talent.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and show their support for our local youngsters as they take part in the hotly contested annual event.”

Pupils from the county borough’s secondary schools are busy perfecting their playing in preparation for the prestigious event. Winners in each category get a £50 prize and the overall winner gets the trophy and a £150 prize. The prize-winners’ schools will receive matching cash prizes and the winner of the Composition Class will become the Young Composer of the Year 2011.

Members of the public are welcome to watch the heats for the competition throughout the day starting at 9am free of charge.

Tickets for the Grand Final are £3 and available from Blackwood Miners’ Institute Box Office by calling 01495 227206.
