A post office in Cross Keys, due to shut Friday, will remain open after a new tenant was found.
Mohammad Mujahid had run the post office, in Risca Road, alongside a grocery shop and off-licence for 13 years, but decided to close after falling trade brought on by supermarkets and the internet.
He told the South Wales Argus earlier this year that a decision to cut his yearly rate by the Post Office was the “final straw”.
But, according to Plaid Cymru’s Assembly Islwyn candidate Steffan Lewis, the post office will remain open after he was told a buyer had been found for the branch.
Mr Lewis said: “I understand the sub-postmaster has agreed to maintain the Post Office service until a recruitment process by the Post Office is completed. This is great news for Cross Keys.
“The post office is such an important part of the community and its closure, even temporarily, would have made things very difficult for many people. I hope residents in Cross Keys will continue to support the post office, thereby ensuring its long-term future.”
