Organisers of Megaday 2011 have said this year’s charity music festival raised £15,000 for Velindre Hospital.

More than 1,500 revellers packed out Virgina Park in Caerphilly on the weekend for the 17th two-day festival.

Megaday is held each year at Caerphilly Rugby Club’s Virginia Park ground in memory of local musicians Andrew Nichols, known as Mega, and Paul Grahame, who both lost their lives to cancer.

Until his death in 2001, Paul had played at every Megaday with his band PG and the Tips and had also played a major role in organising the festival.

To mark the tenth anniversary, in tribute to Paul, his band “The Tips” reformed to play a special one off show of his favourite and most popular songs.

Paul’s 11-year-old nephew Callum took up Paul’s guitar and played the song ‘Shooting Star’ – a tune that is known to Megaday regulars as one of Paul’s signature songs.

Callum’s mother and Paul’s sister Katrina said: “

The weekend saw over 15 bands and local DJs perform on the Megaday stage in front of a delighted and enthusiastic Megaday crowd.

James Edwards, one of the co-organisers of Megaday, said: “It’s been a fantastic weekend, the weather’s been good, the crowds came in there masses and the event went like clockwork, we’d like to thank every who helped make it happen.

Since it began, Megaday has raised more than £200,000 for Velindre Hospital.
