An industrial heritage museum has received a £2,500 lottery cash boost.

The Risca Heritage Museum, which is run by the Oxford House Industrial History Society, was given the money by the lottery-funded Awards for All Wales.

The money has allowed the museum to purchase display cabinets to show the smaller items in its collection, such as specialist tools formerly used by local craftsmen in the iron foundry and the brewery cooperage.

A custom-built cover has also been purchased for their working model of water-powered pumping in a metal mine.

The money has also allowed the society to print publicity leaflets for the first time to attract visitors from further afield.

Society chairman Steve Rowson said: “The money will make a real difference to the Risca community, allowing us to vary our museum displays for them but also to encourage the discerning tourist and groups to pay us a visit.”

The museum is staffed by volunteers from the Oxford House Industrial History Society and is housed in the former Risca Collieries Workmen’s Institute, at the junction of St Mary Street and Grove Road.

During the summer the museum is open between 10am and 12.30pm every Saturday morning. It can also open at other times by arrangement.
