Holly was beaten so badly that she may have suffered brain damage.

A 21-year-old Blackwood man has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and common assault after a horrifying dog beating.

The attack on the terrier cross-breed, named Holly, happened on November 30 last year at 3pm in Cefn Fforest and was so bad that vets think she may have suffered brain damage.

A passer-by stepped in to help the dog and stopped the attack and was verbally and physically threatened by the attacker.

Holly, as she was later named by carers, was taken to the Bridge Veterinary Surgery in Pontllanfraith, for treatment.

Holly was later released by vets and was cared for by a foster family found through Caerphilly County Borough Council’s dog warden.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Following an incident on November 30, 2009 in the Cefn Fforest area of Blackwood, which resulted in a dog receiving injuries, a 21-year-old male from Blackwood has been arrested and charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and common assault.

The man has been bailed and will appear before Caerphilly Magistrates on February 23.

Update:The case was adjourned and Miles Simmonds, 21, of Fairview, Blackwood, is due to appear before Caerphilly Magistrates again on March 16 charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and common assault.
