Blackwood man jailed three years for bomb making

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:54, Wednesday February 24th, 2010.

A Blackwood man has been jailed for three years for making explosive devices at his home.

Darren Tinklin, 24, of Waunllwyn Crescent, previously admitted two charges of making explosives, including black powder and a pipe bomb, and possessing a firearm, at Cardiff Crown Court.

Yesterday he appeared at Newport Crown Court where he was sentenced to three years minus the 119 days he has already served in custody.

The court was told the former member of the far-right had given up his political interests in 2005 and that he has a drug problem.

Gwent Police originally arrested Tinklin and two others on suspicion of drugs offences on October 21 last year after executing a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

After further inquiries, the Metropolitan Police Service Counter Terrorism Command was called and the trio were transferred to a central London police station for questioning.

They were re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000.

The two other men, aged 24 and 41, were later released without charge.

Last month at Cardiff Crown Court a charge of possessing a document containing information “of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism” was dropped.

Three other charges of making explosives against Tinklin were ordered to lie on file.
