Community to help choose new public artwork for Risca

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Wednesday September 21st, 2011.

Residents of Risca are to vote on the design of some new public artwork.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is working in partnership with supermarket Tesco and The Bird Group of Companies Ltd to install a piece of public art at Pontymister Industrial Estate on the approach into Risca town centre and the new Tesco development.

Three artists have been invited to design an art piece for the site and the council wants the help of the community to decide which piece should be installed.

Cllr Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The artwork will help create a welcoming gateway into Risca and the new development, enhancing the town’s identity and helping to create a sense of place.”

The community is invited to view the designs at an exhibition where they can cast their votes. The public vote will make up 50% of the overall score with the remaining 50% being scored on the artists’ performance at interview.

To see the detailed proposals and vote for the artwork visit:
Tesco Extra – Friday September 23, between 2pm and 5pm
Tesco Extra – Saturday September 24, between 11am and 2pm
Risca Library – Monday September 26, between 9.30am and 1pm
Risca Library – Tuesday September 27, between 9.30am and 7.30pm

The successful artist and their design will be announced mid October.

Funding for the artwork has been secured from Tesco as part of its Section 106 agreement for the store.
