A scheme in Bargoed to help kids get to know their local police team by collecting ‘top trump’ style cards has been hailed a success.
In total, 19 children managed to collect the full set of the Bargoed ‘Know Your Bobby’ cards.
More than 450 school children took part in The Gwent Police and Bargoed Communities First scheme. Each police officer and police community support officer in the team had their own playing card, showing their picture, contact details and tips on how to stay safe.
Over the last five months, children from Aberbargoed Primary School, Bro Sannon Primary School, St Gwladys Bargoed, Gilfach Fargoed Primary School, Park Primary School and Ysgol Gymraeg School (Gilfach) have been collecting cards from officers when they have seen them patrolling local streets.
As a reward, the 19 children who gathered all 13 cards were presented with a certificate, goodie bag and a £10 book voucher – those who took part received a certificate and goodie bag.
Eve Churchward, Bargoed Neighbourhood Policing Team PCSO, said: “The scheme has been very successful throughout greater Bargoed. The children have really enjoyed collecting the cards.
“We have had a really positive response from the local community and the scheme has definitely encouraged more children to come and talk to us when we are walking around the area.
“I hope that they hold onto the cards so they have our contact details and safety messages, and that they will continue to talk to us, particularly if they are having any problems they want to discuss.”
