Nathan Cleverly was last week welcomed to the council offices in Ystrad Mynach by Cllr James Fussell, the deputy mayor of Caerphilly County Borough.

European and Commonwealth boxing champion Nathan Cleverly joined pupils at Heolddu Comprehensive School for a healthy workout last week in a drive to encourage more youngsters to keep fit.

European and Commonwealth boxing champion Nathan swapped the boxing ring for the school sports hall, where he joined more than 40 pupils in one of their gruelling twice-weekly circuit training sessions.

It’s a busy time for the Phillipstown-born Light Heavyweight fighter, who is also currently studying for a Maths degree.

Last week he was celebrated by councillors at the Ty Penallta council offices at Ystrad Mynach. The boxer was welcomed by Cllr James Fussell, the deputy mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, and proudly displayed his championship belts.

On Tuesday the boxer will be joining pupils from his old school Blackwood Comprehensive to run a Sport Relief Mile at Blackwood Showfields, in Cefn Fforest.

  • Circuit sessions at Heolddu Leisure Centre are from 3pm to 4.30pm every Wednesday and Friday and are completely free for people to take part in.The sessions are part of the Sport Caerphilly 5×60 programme funded by the Sports Council for Wales and are run by the school’s maths specialist and Sixth Form head Jonathan Price, who is a former Karate practitioner and weight training expert. For more information please contact Jonathan Price or the Heolddu School Sport Coordinator Neil Roberts on 01443 875531.
