The Caerphilly Friends of the Earth group has been recognised at the organisation’s national conference for its work.

The group was announced as winners of the Earthmovers Award for Group of the Year – beating more than 200 other Friends of the Earth local groups.

Bleddyn Lake, co-ordinator of Caerphilly FOE said: “We are proud to be a part of the Friends of the Earth family, trying to make a difference not just locally but also nationally and globally.”

As Friends of the Earth members gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the organisation, the Caerphilly group was nominated for the activities they have undertaken during the year, and were chosen as winners from a shortlist that included groups from Hull, Newport, Oxford and Stockport.

The Caerphilly group organised their first Green Fayre in October 2010, followed by the Green Question Time in May 2011 when prospective AMs were quizzed about their environmental policies.

It has also organised a free showing of the film ‘No Impact Man’ in June as well as taking part in local and national campaigns.

The group is currently planning for this year’s Green Fayre on November 19 and a Seed Swap to be held in February 2012.
