Coleg Gwent Crosskeys Campus launches fruit & veg co-operative

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:15, Thursday March 17th, 2011.

Students at Coleg Gwent Crosskeys campus have launched their own fruit and veg co-operative.

An Abergavenny-based supplier will deliver fruit and vegetables every week to the campus where a group of 30 Independent Living Skills (ILS) students will sort it and bag it to be sold to staff for £2.50.

Lecturer Victoria English said: “The students learn basic work skills on their course and this project is a fantastic opportunity to learn about business enterprise skills, to develop team-working skills and to give our college staff access to high quality affordable fresh fruit and vegetables.”

Coleg Gwent Organisation Development Manager Gill Pollock is looking forward to buying off the students.

She said: “When you work nine to five it can be difficult to buy really fresh produce so the co-operative is giving staff the opportunity to do this at very competitive prices.”
