Caerphilly Council tops recycling league table

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Tuesday October 18th, 2011.

The latest recycling figures show that Caerphilly County Borough Council is once again the best performing local authority in South Wales.

Figures for April to June, 2011 show that the authority’s recycling, reuse and composting rate is 57% – four percent more than the same period of last year and 18% more than April to June 2009.

In South Wales only Monmouthshire comes close at 55% while the highest in Wales is the Isle of Anglesey – just 2% more than Caerphilly. The Welsh average is 48%.

Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for public services and housing, said: “I’m really proud at how the people of the county borough have embraced the council’s green agenda to dramatically reduce the amount of municipal waste going to landfill. They deserve a big thank you.

“While our recycling and composting rate is excellent we are pulling out all the stops to improve that further. Without the public’s support we could not achieved what we have.”
