Plaid AM calls for Commissioner for the Disabled

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Tuesday October 18th, 2011.

South Wales East Plaid Cymru AM Lindsay Whittle has asked the Welsh Government to consider establishing a Commissioner for the Disabled.

Lindsay Whittle, Plaid’s spokesperson on equalities, quizzed Carwyn Jones on the issue during First Minister’s questions, asking what action he was taking to ensure disabled people in Wales did not suffer from discrimination.

He said: “A number of third sector organisations are working strenuously to combat discrimination against disabled people.

“We have a Commissioner for Older People and a Children’s Commissioner, What would your response be to the proposal that this Government should set up a working group, to include representatives from the third sector, in order to discuss establishing the post of commissioner for disabled people?”

The First Minister said that the discrimination of the disabled was a serious problem which had been highlighted.

He described the idea of a Commissioner for the Disabled as interesting and said: “We would have to ensure that it did not cut across any similar post or appointment by the UK Government. It is certainly an idea worth pursuing.”
