Residents and businesses urged to be vigilant of energy rebate scam

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Thursday October 20th, 2011.

Residents and businesses are being warned not to fall victim to a telephone scam where they are offered an energy bill rebate.

Caerphilly County Borough Council recently received a call from a business in the Bargoed area which had been contacted on several occasions by a person claiming to be from the energy supplier for the business.

The caller advised the business that it was due a refund due to over-payments on previous bills. The business was asked to provide bank details in order to process the reimbursement.

The owner of the business suspected the offer and called the energy company directly – which confirmed it was a bogus call.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “I would urge everyone to remain vigilant and to never disclose bank details if they have any suspicions. If residents are in any doubt, I would encourage them to contact our Trading Standards team on 01495 235 291 for information and advice.”
