Caerphilly drivers snared in Gwent Police spot-checks

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:00, Tuesday March 22nd, 2011.

Scores of Caerphilly drivers were pulled over in a day of roadside spot-checks by Gwent Police.

A total of 174 vehicles were stopped on Thursday across Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly in a joint operation by police, trading standards officers and the Department for Work and Pensions.

They issued 13 fines for offences including not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone at the wheel.

Two vehicles were seized for insurance or licensing offences, 12 were taken for further checks because they were suspected of being over-loaded, and four notices were issued for defects.

Another 72 were referred to the Department for Work and Pensions.

Sergeant Micah Hassell said: “This operation is one of a series being run over the next 6 months to specifically target road traffic offences.

“We are utilising intelligence and conducting high visibility roadside checks to identify offenders and raise awareness of how seriously we take these offences in Gwent.

“This kind of operation enables officers to identify a wide range of offences by just stopping vehicles and speaking to drivers at the roadside.

“We have systems and technology at our fingertips to conduct checks on numerous databases so the chances of any criminal activity going undetected is extremely slim.

“Gwent Police will continue to take a proactive approach to identify offences being committed by road users 365 days a year.”

Anyone with information about crimes on the road is asked to call Gwent Police on 01633 838111.
