Street light switch off saves Caerphilly Council £180,000

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:48, Monday October 24th, 2011.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has revealed its controversial decision to switch off street lighting in non-residential areas has saved it almost £180,000.

Last year councillors agreed to the switch off between midnight and 5.30am on all main roads connecting towns and villages. The move has saved the authority £180,000 and 1,701,991kw of energy.

Cllr Colin Mann, deputy leader and cabinet member for sustainability said: “We have pledged to hit ambitious green targets and as a consequence needed to consider new ways of becoming cleaner and greener.

“This move, which involves operating 5,145 of our 27,046 street lights on reduced hours has generated substantial savings, both in terms of carbon reduction and in monetary terms too, and emphasises clearly our commitment to improve our environment.”

The Plaid Cymru plan to switch off the lights was vehemently opposed by Labour councillors and Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert.
