Initial work on Ystrad Mynach College’s new £5 million building has been completed.

The main shell of the building has been completed and work will now start on fitting the block out ready for students this September.

The new building will have 13 classrooms, a new library, improved catering facilities and public areas for students, exhibitions, competitions and public events, providing the college with some much-needed space for its 15,000 students.

College principal Bryn Davies said: “It is very exciting to reach this point in the development.
“The build has generated a lot of interest by both learners and lecturers and it is rewarding to see the progress made.

“The completed building will provide us with the very latest teaching amenities and public area and we are all looking forward to welcoming our new and existing learners into this latest build at The College Ystrad Mynach come September.”

Building firm Midas Construction is building the new four-storey teaching facility and link building.

The new block has achieved a BREEAM (BR Environmental Assessment Method) excellence rating for its green technology.

It includes a biomass boiler to heat the college, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and a green roof.

The development has been funded as part of a £50million investment project by the Welsh Assembly Government to improve facilities of colleges in Wales.

Dave Haskell, divisional director at Midas Construction, said: “We are delighted to be working with The College Ystrad Mynach in the construction of this facility which represents an important part of this South Wales College Expansion plan.

“The building is being built with the environment and sustainability in mind and includes some important features such as the laminated timber frame structure and planted green roof.”
