Popular Blackwood Independent councillor resigns

Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge has resigned citing “personal reasons”.

Popular and well-known in the community for his work, Independent councillor Mr Etheridge was first elected in 1999.

After his resignation last week, he told the South Wales Argus: “There’s a lot going on in my family life and I’ve been an elected member for 11 years so it’s time to start putting my family first.”

Mr Etheridge’s father died last month aged 89 and he also makes frequent trips to Great Ormond Street Hospital where his grandson is being treated for a genetic condition.

The now ex-councillor is the subject of an investigation by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales into childcare allowance claims he received while sitting on Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Fellow councillors have praised Mr Etheridge’s long-standing commitment to his community.

Cllr Keith Smallman told the Rhymney Valley Express: “Every ounce of his spare time was spent dealing with council business.

“I think he always worked vigorously for the residents of Blackwood and they have lost a good friend and advocate on their behalf.”
