Hengoed school gets Sport Wales accolade

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Friday March 25th, 2011.

A Hengoed school has been recognised for its PE teaching.

Tir-y-Berth Primary School in New Rd, Tir-y-berth, Hengoed, is one of 29 across Wales to have been awarded the ‘ActiveMarc Cymru’.

The accolade, for high quality physical education, school sport and promotion of physical activity, comes from Sport Wales and the Association for Physical Education.

Sian Clemens, headteacher at Tir-y-Berth Primary School said: “As a school, we are committed to encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Our curriculum is balanced to ensure all pupils receive a good time allocation for PE, there are a number after-school sporting activities and we are continually looking to extend the range on offer.

“Our good standards of achievements in gymnastics, creative activities and competitive activities have been recognised through the ActiveMarc Award – the staff and children at the school thoroughly deserve this award – well done everyone.”

Councillor Phil Bevan, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning, said, “This is a wonderful achievement for Tir-y-Berth Primary School and is testament to the teaching staff at the school for their commitment to providing first class physical education to the school’s pupils.”
