Councillors will today discuss plans to close a care home despite fierce local opposition.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s health, social care and well-being scrutiny committee are set to pass a recommendation to cabinet to close Ty Darran care home in Risca.
Families and friends of the home’s residents have been campaigning to save it, collecting a petition of more than 13,000 signatures and marching through Risca on Sunday.
The Plaid-controlled council wants to close Ty Darran arguing there is a surplus of spaces and that parts of the 36-bed home are not fit for purpose.
The council has said the number of spaces at care homes in the county borough has increased because of the authority’s success in supporting people in their own homes.
A report to be discussed by cabinet members states: “The strength of feelings and emotions generated during the consultation process are recognised. It is acknowledged that this is a difficult and uncertain time for residents and relatives.
“However, members should note the feedback from the consultation exercise is only one part of the process and the authority must be mindful of the need for continuing modernisation and investment in new services to support people in their own homes.”
If scrutiny councillors recommend the proposals they will go forward to the council’s cabinet on May 18.
