Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr wards named after former collieries

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:00, Thursday November 3rd, 2011.

The Aneurin Bevan Health Board has announced the wards in the new Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr are to be named after former local collieries.

The announcement comes after a campaign by local politicians to get the wards to reflect Caerphilly County Borough’s mining heritage.

The agreed names are: Rhymney, Bargoed, Penallta, Bedwas, Oakdale, Risca.

A spokesman for the Anerurin Bevan Health Board said: “We would like to thank all those staff and local people who have provided very helpful suggestions about the naming of the wards at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr. The suggestions made have been important in helping the Health Board to identify the final names.”

The mental health wards, which have already opened to patients, are called Ty Glas, Annwylfan and Ty Cyfannol.

  • The A&E unit will close at Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital at 12 noon on Saturday November 12. These services will be available in the new Local Emergency Centre at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr from 9am on Monday November 14.

Would it have killed them to make it three from each constituency?
