Workers’ rights for Caerphilly youths

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Wednesday March 30th, 2011.

Caerphilly County Borough Council officers are out to make sure young people who work are getting their rights and being kept safe.

The council is taking part in Child Employment Fortnight, run by the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment.

Cllr Phil Bevan, the council’s cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning, said, “It is important that employers understand the laws surrounding young people in the workplace in order for them to be fully aware of their responsibilities as an employer, as well as the rights of the employee.

“Our officers will be on hand to offer advice on issues such as the permitted hours that young people can work, as well as the types of employment they are allowed to undertake, and advising employers that they need to obtain a work permit for school age employees.

“It is vitally important that young people in the workplace are kept safe, and that their experience of work is a positive one”.

The officers are out to advise employers on the minimum age a child can be employed, permitted hours of work, potential injuries in the workplace, rates of pay and what kind of jobs young people are permitted to do.
