Plaid AM backs campaign for better public toilets

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:38, Wednesday November 9th, 2011.

Plaid Cymru AM Lindsay Whittle has proposed a statement of opinion along with three other Assembly members calling for better public toilets.

The statement of opinion, which is the Assembly’s mechanism for allowing AMs to raise issues, has been jointly tabled with Mike Hedges (Labour), Darren Millar (Conservative) and Kirsty Williams (Lib Dem).

It has already attracted the backing of 16 Assembly Members, making 20 in total – one-third of the Assembly’s total members.

The motion

  • Expresses concern that many people in Wales find provision of public toilets to be below an acceptable standard;
  • Supports the Welsh Senate of Older People’s “P is for People” campaign for better public toilets;
  • Recognises the importance of public toilets and is committed to improving provision in Wales.
  • Mr Whittle said: “I think everyone recognises that public toilet provision needs to be improved generally.

    “I don’t believe this issue is just a matter for local authorities. New areas of funding need to be found and, perhaps, we should look at the possibilities of sponsorship to provide modern toilets.

    “I know the Welsh Government has been providing funding through local authorities to encourage businesses to allow public access to their toilets and this needs to be expanded. Many older people are reluctant to go out unless they know there are facilities if they need to spend a penny.”

    The Welsh Senate of Older People will hold a Day of Action at the Assembly on Wednesday, November 16.
