Gardeners given more say in running of Caerphilly allotments

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 18:13, Thursday March 31st, 2011.

Gardeners will be given more responsibility for the running of Caerphilly’s allotments under new council plans.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has agreed to give allotment associations longer leases on peppercorn rents with responsibility for maintenance of the sites.

It will also make it a spending priority for disused plots to be brought back into use.

The council said there would be a greater emphasis on communities running their own allotments under the plans.

Deputy council leader councillor Allan Pritchard said: “This is a good example of how we can work with the local community and give them greater power to run and manage local facilities. We want to give control of key assets back to local people and we don’t need to involved on a day to day bases as long as we are satisfied that things are being done fairly.”
