Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert concern over compost site

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:00, Wednesday July 7th, 2010.

Residents living near a compost site have said their lives are being made a misery because of the awful smell coming from it.

Jeff Cuthbert, Assembly Member for Caerphilly, has asked for an urgent meeting with the Environment Agency Wales, at which he will call for an immediate suspension to all composting activity at the Bryn Compost site, near Gelligaer.

The move follows an increasing number of complaints from residents in Gelligaer, Nelson and Penybryn. People living near the food composting facility have said that the stench is getting increasingly worse.

Mr Cuthbert said: “I have worked closely with local residents, Caerphilly County Borough Council, the company, the Environment Agency and the NHS for the best part of two years now.

“There has been a genuine effort from all sides to address the odour problem without affecting business operations at the site.

“However, the quality of life for local residents has now deteriorated to such an extent because of the odour from the site that it seems there is no other option left than to suspend all activity until the issue is resolved.”
