Caerphilly County Borough Council has revealed there were almost 3,000 incidents of fly-tipping last financial year.

Of the 2,914 reported incidents during 2010/11, 2,870 (98.49%) were cleared within five days.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “These are excellent figures, and our officers work very hard to help keep Caerphilly County Borough clean, green and safe.

“Fly-tipping is a serious environmental crime which can pose a severe threat to humans and wildlife, as well as having a serious detrimental effect on our countryside.”

The council is also appealing to residents to report fly-tippers.

Cllr Gough continued: “We are appealing to residents to contact us if they see anyone fly-tipping or if they spot any fly-tipped waste. By working with us to report the incident, the waste can be removed and with your help the crime can be investigated and the offenders prosecuted.”

Those convicted of fly-tipping can face fines of up to £50,000 and/or imprisonment.
