The majority of schools in Caerphilly County Borough are expected be closed due to industrial action on Wednesday.

Wednesday will see the largest public sector strike in a generation in a protest against Government plans to reform public sector pensions.

Workers from across the public sector, from Border Agency staff to driving examiners, will join picket lines or protest marches.

All schools are closed except Bedwas Infants (four out of five classes. Class 1 will not attend), Fochriw Primary and Pontlottyn Primary.

Council offices will be closed to the public but essential services for adults and children will operate on a skeleton staff.

For emergency social services:
Adult services duty and information team on 0808 1002500
Children’s services contact and referral team on 0808 1001727
For all other emergencies call 01443 875500

Gwent Police has said all non-emergency from offices at stations will be closed for 24 hours, with the exception of Newport. They will reopen as normal on Thursday December 1.

Assistant Chief Constable Simon Prince said: “Keeping the public safe remains our top priority and we have put contingencies in place to ensure that this isn’t affected by the industrial action. We understand that union members may wish to support the strike action, however our duty as a police service is to protect and reassure the public, and this duty will in no way be compromised during the strike.”

The Aneurin Bevan Health Board, which runs Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, has said reduced services will be in place with patients told about any appointment cancellations.

Staff and nurses who are members of Unison are striking strike, but doctors and nurses in other unions are not.
