A historic Caerphilly Methodist church dating from 1930 has been awarded a £180,000 grant from the Welsh Government.

Wesley Methodist Church in Caerphilly successfully applied for £178,522 of Community Facilities and Activities Programme (CFAP) funds from the Welsh Government for essential repairs and conservation work.

The Church will plan repairs as the first step in a wider project to open up the Crescent Road building for wider community use.

The Church Minister – Rev Sue O’Hare – said: “We are delighted to have been given this grant. This is part one of the project in which we hope to renovate other parts of the building for use by the community.

“With this money, we will be doing the roof to make it weather-proof plus other repairs such as the gutters.”

The building is already widely used by the community for a host of activities – full details are available at www.caerphillymethodistchurch.org

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert welcomed the grant and said: “This is wonderful news for Wesley Church.

“The Church, which opened in 1930, often hosts special events such as social evenings, choir concerts, mother and toddler groups, charity events and is a bit of a cultural centre for the area. The application process for CFAP funding is very rigorous and I have no doubt that they will invest and use this money for the benefit of the wider community.”

CFAP is a competitive grant scheme operated by the Welsh Government to help community and voluntary organisations provide facilities or carry out activities which will promote the regeneration of communities.

Launched in 2002, it has so far funded 831 projects across Wales totalling over £92 million.
