Gwent Police help Oakdale primary school to put on a show

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:04, Thursday December 1st, 2011.

School children from Rhiw-Syr-Dafydd Primary School, in Oakdale, put on a show stopping theatre production on Wednesday, with a little help from the police.

A group of 16 children, between the ages of 9 and 11, put on the show called ‘Once Upon a Time’ as part of the Young Promoters project run by Gwent Police and the Arts Council of Wales.

‘Once Upon a Time’ sees time travelling storytellers crash land in a Welsh town, they dust themselves off and start trying to tell one of their favourite fairy tales.

Over the last few weeks the group of pupils have been attending weekly after-school workshops to prepare and learn new skills – such as marketing and selling tickets, as well as arranging the refreshments.

Special Inspector Christine Smith, who has co-ordinated the scheme said: “All pupils have all worked really hard over the last few weeks to help bring the show to the Oakdale community, they have all taken their responsibilities very seriously.

“It’s a great way for Gwent Police to strengthen links with local, young people and I hope that they have picked up new skills along the way.”
