The Welsh Ambulance Service is urging Christmas revellers to act responsibly to lessen its demand.
The trust is anticipating peak demand for its services over the festive season on Friday December 16, Saturday 17, Friday 23 and Saturday 31
Dafydd Jones-Morris, Director of Operations for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We do anticipate an increase in calls associated with these weekend nights of the festive season. We are not killjoys but we do ask the public to act responsibly, look after their friends and colleagues.
“Often Christmas nights out are a “one off” and those who over indulge in alcohol do become unwell. We are asking the public to think in advance about the consequences of a night out. Please make sure that you have planned how you are getting home and bear in mind that it is often very cold late at night.
“Please be sensible when you venture out. We are there to help you but remember we are also here to also respond to people facing life threatening conditions as well.
“The ambulance service and emergency departments are for emergencies only. Please ‘Choose Well’ and remember that pharmacies, GP Out of Hours, NHS Direct Wales and self help are all alternatives to dialling 999.
“We should also like to take this opportunity to remind the public that our staff work 365 days of the year to provide services to patients. Unfortunately we also see an increase in abuse of our staff over this period of the year. Please treat our staff just as you would wish them to treat you…after all it is Christmas for them as well.
“During the Christmas period don’t forget any medicines you need for your health and wellbeing. Having the correct medication will help you enjoy the festive season and take pressure off the region’s busy emergency services.
“This period often sees an increase in demand for the 999 service. If you feel you have a need for the 999 service, then please do not hesitate to call, but we would ask you to consider alternative forms of transport if an individual needs hospital treatment.
“The Welsh Ambulance Service would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a safe and healthy time over the festive period.”
