More than 2,500 people attended Caerphilly’s River of Light lantern parade on Thursday.

Children of all ages braved the cold winter night to display their homemade lanterns .

Organisers said over 800 lanterns were made by children at weekend workshops throughout the month at Caerphilly Leisure Centre.

Accompanied by samba drumming, dancing, costumed performers, giant sculptures and a Chinese Dragon, the parade made its way through the town centre to Crescent Road to finish with a fireworks display at Caerphilly Castle.

Councillor Colin Elsbury, who represents the St Martin’s ward covering Caerphilly town centre, said: “It’s a fantastic event with real community spirit.

“When you see the parade coming down Cardiff Road, you know why they call it a River of Light.”

The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, Cllr Vera Jenkins led the parade through the town and later thanked the crowd for attending and wished everyone a very Merry Christmas.

I thought it was a brilliant parade I loved it, although I am ten thousand miles away in Western Australia
