Man, 85, second victim of Legionnaires outbreak

An 85-year-old man’s death has become the second to be directly linked to the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.

The man died on September 11, the day before Bev Morgan, 49, of Rhymney, died. Mrs Morgan was the first victim to be linked to the current outbreak.

Public health authorities have said 22 people with Legionnaires’ are linked to the outbreak.

A man, 70, and woman, 64, who also died of Legionnaires’s disease are not linked to the outbreak centred around the Heads of the Valleys corridor.

Public Health Wales said it was working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and environmental health officers from eight councils, including Caerphilly County Borough Council, to investigate the cause of the outbreak.

The (HSE) has inspected all registered cooling towers and evaporative condensers in the Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Rhymney areas – 28 in total.

Four industrial sites in Merthyr Tydfil, the Rhymney and Cynon Valleys have been closed but none have been confirmed as the source.

HSE and council environmental health officers have also visited more than 100 other workplaces.
