Rhymney business prosecuted for fly-tipping

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Thursday October 7th, 2010.

A business has been prosecuted for fly-tipping commercial waste in the Caerphilly county borough.

Kaler and Sons, of Rhymney, was prosecuted for allowing commercial waste from their shop premises to be fly-tipped in the Fochriw and Rhymney areas.

The company director of Kaler and Sons appeared at Abertillery Magistrates Court recently. He pleaded guilty to the two offences and was ordered to pay a £300 fine for each offence, together with £1,306.12 prosecution and investigative costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said: “Fly-tipping is a serious environmental crime which can pose a severe threat to humans and wildlife, as well as having a serious detrimental effect on our countryside.

“We won’t allow the very small minority who feel it is acceptable to fly tip to get away with it, and I am glad the court has emphasised the seriousness of the offence in the fines it imposed.”

The council is asking members of the public to be aware of their legal duty to get rid of their waste properly and to report any instances of fly-tipping they may witness.
