2.7 tonnes of food waste recycled in school trial

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Tuesday October 19th, 2010.

Green pupils in schools across Caerphilly County Borough have recycled 2.7 metric tonnes of their food waste as part of a special trial.

Thirteen local schools (two comprehensives and 11 primary) worked with the council’s waste management and catering departments to recycle all their leftover food.

Homeowners across the county borough are already used to recycling their food waste after the council introduced weekly food and green waste collections last year.

The school trial was arranged as part of the council’s ongoing drive to boost recycling rates and the six week scheme was a major success with schools involved managing to recycle 2.7 metric tonnes of food waste.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment, said: “I’d like to thank all the pupils and staff for their support and enthusiasm.

“We are always looking at new ways of recycling more waste and this trial scheme was a major success. Hopefully we can encourage more schools to get involved in the future and help us strengthen our position as one of the greenest councils in Wales.”
