Caerphilly town railway footbridge saved from closure

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Tuesday October 26th, 2010.

A court hearing over the proposed closure of a footbridge at Caerphilly Railway Station, used daily by hundreds of people, including many children, has been called off.

At an extra-ordinary meeting of the town council last week, Plaid Cymru councillor Colin Elsbury tabled a motion under the Highways Act 1980 which gives discretion to the authority to veto any proposal to close a public right of way.

Councillor Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration at Caerphilly County Borough Council, said “I’m absolutely delighted that the town council have been able to put a stop to this proposal.

“This just goes to prove that the Welsh Assembly Government should take into account the feelings of the people they say they represent and not proceed headlong into rash decisions.”

Cllr Davies has received an email from a senior council officer in Caerphilly confirming that the court hearing over the closure application, due to take place on November 11, was being withdrawn.
