Giant pair of wellies in Caerphilly town to highlight risk of flooding

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Thursday October 28th, 2010.

Shoppers in Caerphilly town will be looking twice today as they zip from shop to shop as a giant pair of Wellington boots are due to be displayed.

The wellies will be appearing in Castle Court Shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm as part of Environment Agency Wales’ ‘Flood Awareness Wales’ campaign.

Gareth O’Shea, flood awareness wales project director said: “Climate change is having an impact on our weather patterns and flooding is likely to become more frequent. We need to raise people’s awareness of this increased risk so that they can be prepared. We’re hoping that our giant wellies will catch people’s attention and motivate them to check whether they are at risk.

“We want people to become aware that although flooding cannot be completely prevented there are things that they can do in advance to help reduce the devastating impact it can have on both people and communities.”

Flood awareness officers will be on hand to advise residents about the risk to their area, and to provide information, tips and practical steps to take to help protect their property from flooding.

Mr O’Shea added: “Our flood awareness officers have already been out in force in Pontymister and will be visiting Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach, Risca, Caerphilly and Tirphil, helping people in each area to understand and manage the risk they face.

“In these areas combined there are over 5,800 properties at risk of flooding from rivers.”
