Community heroes from across Caerphilly County Borough have been honoured at a special civic awards ceremony.

A celebration event was held at the council’s headquarters at Penallta House in Ystrad Mynach on Wednesday 13 April

In total, 21 Civic Awards were handed out to people from all walks of life who work to help others.

The recipients of the prestigious Civic Award included:

  • Carl Jones of Bargoed who works for the ambulance service and is actively involved in his local boxing club, working with young people in the area. He also dedicates his spare time supporting the local community as a member of the Neighbourhood Watch and as a Special Constable.
  • Sue Barry and Tracey Leeks are employees at Barclays Bank in Risca. Whilst chatting to a customer they suspected that she was being targeted by rogue tradesmen and alerted Gwent Police.
  • Geraint Evans of Rudry has been the conductor of Aber Valley Male Voice Choir for 40 years and has helped raise over a quarter of a million pounds for charity causes.
  • The Megaday Support Team – The Megaday event in Caerphilly started back in 1995 and has raised almost £200,000 for Velindre Hospital.

County Borough Mayor James Fussell said: “The event was a huge success and it was a real privilege to hear about the amazing achievements of these grassroots heroes.

“The Civic Awards allow us to formally recognise ordinary people for their extraordinary contributions and it was heartening to see that we have so many worthy recipients here in the Caerphilly County Borough.”
