Markham Pavilion transfer to rugby club agreed by council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Friday November 5th, 2010.

Markham Pavilion is to be transferred to Markham Rugby Football Club on a 25 year lease, after Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet agreed the plan.

Cabinet agreed to the transfer of the site after Markham RFC submitted an application to lease the pavilion building in order to develop a clubhouse and improve existing changing facilities on site.

Markham RFC are now in a position to submit further details to progress their plans, which include selling their existing clubhouse, located away from the playing field, in order to fund the demolition of Markham Pavilion and develop new facilities.

Councillor Colin Mann, cabinet member for finance, resources and sustainability, said: “As part of the council’s Community Asset Transfer Programme, we are looking at ways of helping to bring well-used community facilities into the ownership of local organisations placed within the heart of our communities.

“The Markham Pavilion is an extremely well-used facility, and I am confident that this transfer will provide the community with more flexibility to make greater use of the site over the coming months and years. I wish the club well in their endeavours to improve facilities in their area.”

The club has provided an initial plan for the site compromising a small clubroom and bar area, modern changing facilities and toilets.
