More than 2,000 young bookworms from across the Caerphilly county borough took part in a special reading challenge at libraries this summer.

The annual summer reading challenge has become a popular feature of the Caerphilly Library Service over the last 12 years.

‘Space-hop’ was the theme and youngsters from all over the county borough decorated giant cardboard rockets and took part in space-related activities.

To celebrate their achievement, two winners from each library were invited to attend a grand presentation ceremony at Penallta House council offices recently.

The prizes were awarded by the county borough Mayor, Cllr James Fussell, in partnership with writer and broadcaster, Phil Carradice. The overall prize winner was Joseph Baker from Aberbargoed, who was thrilled to receive a £100 Argos gift voucher.
