Birdwatchers and nature lovers are in a flap after a rare species of bird was found nesting at Cwmcarn Forest.

Known as “the phantoms of the forest,” only 500 breeding pairs of goshawks exist in UK but a couple of decided to make Cwmcarn their home.

A special “nest-cam” has been set up for visitors to get a closer look at the birds.

Cwmcarn Forest manager Michael Owen said staff were “thrilled” to find the rare birds nesting on the site.

He said: “The RSPB, in partnership with the Forestry Commission Wales and Caerphilly County Borough Council, are able to transmit live images back to the visitor centre, making this the best seat in the house to follow the progress at the nest site.”

The “nest-cam” will be running until the end of August. For more information visit www.rspb.org.uk/datewithnature

This Goshawk pair must be particularly sociable, given the numbers of people that visit the forestry drive! Let's hope that a trend is starting here.
