Community garden opens in Abertridwr

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Wednesday November 24th, 2010.

A new Nature and Community Garden at the Aber Valley YMCA, in Abertridwr, ha been opened.

The project started in March this year when the YMCA asked charity Groundwork Caerphilly to look at an area of hilly land behind the building.

Groundwork Caerphilly drew up a plan and asked volunteers and students to help create the garden.

A week’s worth of digging and the garden has begun to take shape. Volunteers will now plant flowers to the garden in the spring.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert officially opened the garden last week.

He said: “I am very pleased that the YMCA, which has for a very long time been a wonderful resource for the community, is now able to offer this garden space. It is a great area for people to relax, read and spend time outside when the weather is nice.

“It is also heartening that the students were able to get involved and build skills as well as contribute to the community during this project. Spending time in outside areas is an important element for a healthy lifestyle and I encourage anyone who comes into the YMCA to use the new garden.”
