White Ribbon Day to be marked with vigil

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Tuesday November 30th, 2010.

A candlelit vigil will be held at the council’s offices today to mark White Ribbon Day.

The event, which will raise awareness of domestic abuse and remember those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic abuse, will be held at 4.55pm at the front of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters at Penallta House, Ystrad Mynach.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection, said,: “White Ribbon Day is an excellent opportunity not only to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the support services available here in Caerphilly County Borough, but also a poignant opportunity to remember those that have lost their lives because of domestic abuse.”

One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse at some point during their lives, and White Ribbon day aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse and remember those that have tragically lost their lives as a result of domestic abuse.

Information on the support services available for victims of domestic abuse in Caerphilly County Borough can be found at www.caerphilly.gov.uk/saferccb

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has also voiced his support for White Ribbon Day.

He said: “Violence in our communities is never acceptable, which is why I am supporting White Ribbon Day. Every week in the UK, two women are killed as a result of domestic violence.

“It is crucial that we keep changing attitudes to make it crystal clear that no form of violence towards women is acceptable. Domestic violence is a terrible crime and I hope that this campaign will help reduce the crimes against women.”
