Children will be able to get into Caerphilly Castle for free during a special two-day Christmas event next weekend.
Leaders from Caerphilly County Borough Council recently met with heritage body Cadw to persuade them to allow free castle entry during the Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre.
Councillor Lindsay Whittle, the leader of the council, Cllr Ron Davies and Cllr Phil Bevan formally approached Cadw to waive the charges.
Cllr Whittle said: “Although we couldn’t secure free entry for everyone, we are still delighted that Cadw have agreed to meet us half way and allow children to get into the castle for free.
“The Caerphilly Christmas Fayre is a major event which showcases the wealth of attractions that the town centre has to offer and the castle is a key draw for many people.”
Cllr Ron Davies added: “We would like to thank Cadw for this generous gesture that is in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. Events like this can bring much needed investment to our town centres at a time when retailers need all the support they can get, so it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally and boost the local economy.”
The Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre takes place on Saturday December 11 and Sunday December 12. Last year’s event attracted thousands of visitors to the town centre who soaked up the festive atmosphere.
