New multiplex cinema a possibility for Bargoed

The redevelopment of Bargoed town centre could include a new multiplex cinema.

Last week Caerphilly Council’s cabinet agreed to investigate the possibility of a new multiplex cinema as part of the second phase of the town’s regeneration project.

The first phase of the development will see a new supermarket, several unit shops, a new town square and nearly 400 parking spaces.

Supermarket Morrisons are currently in negotiations to be the anchor tenant for the development.

Cllr Lindsay Whittle, leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We are approaching the final phase of negotiations to make this long awaited scheme a reality for the people of Bargoed.

“Over the next few weeks we hope to be in a position to make a further announcement about the development, and this could be a fantastic Christmas present for the whole community.”

Contractors linked to Simons Ltd, the firm backing the plans to create a major shopping and leisure development in Bargoed, are currently carrying out ground investigations.

Cllr Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “These exciting proposals will help put Bargoed back on the map and provide a major shopping and leisure destination for people across the county borough and beyond.

“A lot of hard work is being done behind the scenes, but I would like to assure local people that we are doing everything possible to deliver this ambitious development as quickly as possible.”

i welcome the idea of a multiplex cinema for bargoed town centre. my dad used to take me to ''the cameo'' in the 1970's it used to be called ''the palace'' now sadly gone to make way for the job centre. with the success of the occasional open air cinema in the hanbury carpark i really feel this needs to be looked into.this would indeed attract the younger generation of the town, as the nearest cinema is just outside caerphilly, a bit out of the way for local people. i sincerely hope that we will have a cinema, somewhere for me to take my own children, just as my dad used to take me to ''cameo''
