Jocelyn Davies AM named Welsh Politician of the Year

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Monday December 13th, 2010.

South Wales East AM Jocelyn Davies has been named Welsh Politician of the Year.

Ms Davies, who is deputy housing minister, won the accolade for her work in Cardiff Bay and has been an AM since the Assembly began in 1999.

The politician, who lives in Newbridge with county councillor husband Mike, was presented the award last week.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Plaid Cymru’s leader and the Welsh Assembly Government’s deputy First Minister, paid tribute to Ms Davies.

He said: “This award is richly deserved. What Jocelyn has been able to achieve as Housing Minister has been remarkable. Her lead on the mortgage rescue scheme has saved so many people in Wales from losing their homes.

“She has delivered a stunning success in passing the 6,500 mark for affordable homes created during this Assembly term, and has shown an extraordinary ability to work with different partners in the housing sector to secure a Housing Measure that will make a real difference for the better in Wales.

“Assembly Members from across the political spectrum will all be pleased that Jocelyn’s dedication has been recognised. She is one of the most respected and well thought of members in the Bay because she is always willing to put Wales before any party priorities. She is a politician respected by stakeholders’ right across her ministerial portfolio as well as the public at large in her region.

“I am extremely pleased that Jocelyn’s hard work has been given the recognition she deserves. Make no mistake this is praise not just for the fantastic year that she has had but for her entire contribution to Wales over the past Assembly term.”
