The next phase of the redevelopment of Bargoed – which could include a multiplex cinema – has been given the go-ahead.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has agreed for officers to begin pursuing a series of developments for the second phase of the programme.
These include a proposed cinema entertainment centre with a restaurant, a mixed commercial and residential development and a landscaped public car park.
Councillor Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and planning said: “Bargoed is one of Caerphilly County Borough’s landmark towns and a key strategic destination for retail, leisure and business, and we are keen to help bring these exciting developments to fruition.”
Cabinet also approved the acquisition of a largely disused garage block in the area for demolition.
The next stage in the process is a public consultation about the proposals before a detailed development brief of phase two is drawn-up and marketed to developers interested in taking on the project.
The first phase of the development is the 2.2-hectare retail plateau with a supermarket, possibly Morrisons, shops and 390 parking spaces.
I'm very pleased indeed to say the least that plans for a multiplex cinema has moved forward. This i strongly feel will be a major boost for the town as well as morrisons.I'm very excited about the project as ive seen the result of the occasional outdoor cinema which has without doubt proved very populer and therfore a success and i think bargoed really needs a cinema, as i'm tired of hearing that there is nothing in bargoed and its dead.Ive also heard negative comments that a cinema and a supermarket will kill trade in the town, i think thats nonsence, if anything if will attract even more shoppers to the other retail outlets. I really hope that a cinema will be a reality and that the public voice will be heard!
We want a cinema and a bowling alley in blackwood or any town from blackwood to risca.
