Pupils from Cwmcarn High School have been helping to plot the course of a popular walk.

More than 300 people have already signed up to the council-organised Twmbarlwm Trek taking place on Saturday May 12.

The event has a 14 mile and a 23 mile walk on offer and pupils from Cwmcarn High School have been surveying of the routes with

The two treks take walkers over the spectacular iron age hillfort of Twmbarlwm and three of the highest points in the county, Twmbarlwm, Mynydd Machen and Mynydd Islwyn.

Pupils have been working alongside the council’s Countryside Access and Rights of Way Officer Andy Powell as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

This is the first time a local school has been involved in assessing a walking route. To round off the project, pupils will be helping to marshal the actual event.

More information on the Twmbarlwm Trek can be found on www.visitcaerphilly.com where application forms can be downloaded.

Alternatively call Brian Begg on 07788547350 or Andy Powell on 01495 235092.

There is an entry fee of £6 for both walks, no entries will be accepted on the day for the 14 or 23 mile routes, closing date for entries is April 27.

  • If you don’t fancy so many hills, then the Monmouthshire – Brecon canal offers a range of shorter flatter led walks from one mile to 4.5 miles. There is no charge for the canal walk. No pre-entry is required, just turn up at 10.15am on Saturday May 12, fill in a registration form and health questionnaire and be ready to walk by 11am.
