Almost 300 motorists in the Gwent area were stopped for not wearing a seatbelt during a recent safety crackdown.
The All Wales seatbelt campaign, which ran for two weeks last month, saw 1,917 motorists stopped across Wales’ four police regions.
Officers carried out targeted patrols to stop and if appropriate, fine drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts.

- South Wales force area – 230
- Dyfed Powys force area – 843
- Gwent force area – 281
Inspector Lee Ford, of the Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “Seatbelt education and enforcement campaigns are conducted regularly by Gwent Police.
“It is disappointing to see that some drivers and passengers are still determined not to wear seatbelts. If you do not wear a seatbelt you not only endanger yourself, but also other passengers within your vehicle in the event of a collision.
“Many deaths each year would be avoided if all drivers and passengers wore seatbelts.”
Motorists and passengers not wearing a seatbelt could receive a £60 Fixed Penalty Notice or a court imposed fine of up to £500.
Now that`s the way to spend police budgets and utilise stretched manpower at a time the Chief Constable of Gwent is determined to close Police Stations throughout the Caerphilly County Borough Area `TO SAVE MONEY`. Yet this same Cheif Constable fails to bring local maniacs with shotguns who kill dogs and horses and break into peoples homes with firearms, to justice.
And I recently notice police officers driving around Caerphilly in Brand New Police Cars, they don`t come cheap!!!.
